Cat Mitigation

Small Paws. Big Impact.

Helping wildlife thrive while supporting responsible cat ownership.

Cats are much-loved members of our families. Their curiosity and natural instincts are part of what makes them special.
Across the UK, wildlife is already under pressure from habitat loss, pollution, and environmental change. Domestic cats, even when well fed, will still hunt as part of their instinctive behaviour.
Our Cat Mitigation and Pawprint Offsetting initiative focuses on practical, positive action. We aim to reduce wildlife loss while supporting cat welfare and responsible ownership.
You can make a difference today by helping us restore the habitats wildlife depend on.

Why Wildlife Needs Our Help

The United Kingdom is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world.

Habitat destruction remains the largest threat, but additional pressures make recovery even harder.
Domestic cats are natural hunters. This behaviour is instinctive and not the fault of owners. However, research shows that cats kill millions of wild animals each year in the UK.

Individually these losses may appear small. Collectively they place added strain on already vulnerable wildlife populations, particularly in urban and suburban environments.
This initiative is built on awareness and solutions. Our goal is to reduce impact in ways that are practical, supportive, and effective.

Protecting wildlife does not mean choosing between pets and nature.

Simple Ways to Reduce Wildlife Predation

There are several proven ways to lower hunting success while maintaining a high quality of life for your cat.

Bell Collars

Quick release collars fitted with bells can reduce successful bird predation by alerting wildlife to a cat’s presence.

Indoor Enrichment

Climbing spaces, puzzle feeders, and interactive toys help channel hunting instincts safely.

Wildlife Friendly Gardens

Dense shrubs, raised feeders, nesting boxes, and protected ground habitats create safer spaces for wildlife to breed and feed.

Indoor Hours

Keeping cats indoors during dawn and dusk, when wildlife activity peaks, significantly reduces hunting opportunities.

Catios and Outdoor Enclosures

Secure outdoor enclosures allow cats to enjoy fresh air and stimulation without risk to wildlife or themselves.

Offset Your Cat’s Pawprint

Even with mitigation measures in place, outdoor cats will still hunt from time to time.

Our Pawprint Offsetting programme allows supporters to directly fund conservation work that restores the balance.
Much like environmental offsetting schemes, donations are used to repair and strengthen the habitats that wildlife rely on.
Funding supports work such as habitat restoration, hedgerow planting, nesting infrastructure, and conservation breeding programmes for vulnerable species.
If your cat spends time outdoors, this is a meaningful way to give back to the wildlife sharing that space.

Your Donation in Action

Every contribution funds practical, measurable conservation work across the UK. With your donations, we are:

Planting wildflowers for pollinators and our hedgehogs.

Installing nesting boxes and creating hibernation areas.

Creating wildlife corridors to provide protection.

Restoring habitats for vulnerable species to thrive.
